If you have done any research on kitchen or bathroom remodeling, you are sure to have run into the terms “custom kitchens” and “custom baths” more often than you can remember. But what exactly is a custom design, and why are custom designs so popular?
A custom kitchen or bath design is simply one that is made specifically for your space, your needs, and your likes. Custom designs are the opposite of stock kitchens or baths, in which the pieces (cabinets, countertops, etc.) are mass produced in a factory and then installed in spaces of every shape and size.
Unlike mass produced kitchen and bath components, not all kitchens and bathrooms are the same. This is the first reason that people prefer custom kitchen and bath designs - custom designs generally fit your space better. With stock cabinets, for example, each cabinet is a certain dimension. If the length of your walls is not perfectly divisible by the cabinets’ width, you will have some extra space that is wasted. With custom cabinets, you can use every last inch of wall space. And as anyone who has organized a kitchen before knows, every little bit of cabinet space counts!
Another reason that many people choose custom kitchen and bath designs is the ability to customize their space to their desires. With a stock shower, the shower head is at a set height, the soap shelves are wherever the manufacturer thought was best, and everything is a color that they thought would sell well. But what if you are taller than average or want a pink shower? A custom bathroom design allows you to raise the shower head as high as you need to shower comfortably, and pink wall tile is always an option!
In the kitchen, stock cabinets and countertops determine where appliances can go and what appliances you can have. Do you want both a dishwasher and a wine cooler in your kitchen? With a stock kitchen there is often only one appliance cutout, so you’ll have to choose between the two. In a custom kitchen, however, you can have both (and even make space for a beverage cooler as well if you want!).
Custom kitchens let you decide where the microwave is in relation to the stove, how high the raised server is (if you want a raised server), whether the cabinets have shelves or drawers, and hundreds of other details that turn a standard kitchen into
your kitchen.
